Dry Needling

Dry Needling is becoming a widely-used strategy in treating a wide range of sporting injuries and musculoskeletal conditions. It is effective for treating acute symptoms as well as chronic pain, with minimal side effects.

CHSM conducts dry needling treatments in our Maitland sports clinic.

What is Dry Needling?

Trigger points are tight taut bands within the muscle fibre that limit blood flow, they are commonly referred to as ‘muscle knots’.

The lack of blood flow leads to an inability to remove the toxins and by-products used in muscle contractions. The prolonged presence of these waste products can chemically irritate the muscle fibre and produce pain (a condition known as myofascial pain).

Trigger Point Dry Needling is an effective treatment option for patients with this myofascial pain. It involves a solid, dry filament acupuncture needle being directly inserted into a trigger point within the muscle tissue itself.

How Does it Work?

Dry needling encourages muscles to relax by bringing essential blood flow back into them. At the same time, it expels toxic waste out of muscles that cause them to be tight and painful. The results can lead to healthier muscles which are more relaxed and pain free.

Will it Hurt?

The acupuncture needles are extremely thin, and a majority of patients do not even feel them penetrate the skin.
